Having Anxiety is NOT the Same as Being Stressed

Everyone gets stressed once in a while, but not everyone has anxiety. Here is a list of some reasons why the two are not the same thing.

  1.  There is always a reason for being stressed. Whether it is your work, job, school, friends and family, they can cause stress. For people with anxiety, there is not always a reason why they are feeling anxious. Sometimes the anxious feeling can come out of nowhere and with no explanation.

  2.  Being stressed sucks, but you can get on with your day. Anxiety consumes you. It is all you think about. You run thoughts and scenarios over and over in your head. It stops or hinders your day and what you are doing.

  3. Stress can keep you up at night because you are thinking of everything you have to do the next day or during the week. Anxiety keeps you up at night, tossing and turning, thinking about something stupid you said or did 4 years ago. Sometimes you can’t sleep because of that anxious feeling, and you still don’t know why you are anxious.

  4. Being stressed is logical. There is a reason for it and making a plan or talking to someone usually helps.Someone who is anxious can know that there is no logical reason for their feelings, but their brain is telling them that something that is considered “safe” to most, is dangerous and wrong. There is a feeling of impending doom. Telling someone who has anxiety to just “get over it” will not help because they actually can’t get over it.
